5 Productivity Tips Every Millennial Should Adopt
Because we are obsessed with efficiency.
These productivity tips will save you a minimum of 1 hour a day.
You’re going to be disgusted when you realize how much time you’ve been wasting.
Most people are unaware of this until they change a small behaviour, and then boom! Time saved.
Time is precious.
In fact, it is your most valuable asset and that’s exactly why millennials have become obsessed with productivity.
Do some quick math and you’ll realize that saving 1 hour a day is 15 days of straight-up time saved per year.
And guess what… this article will only take you 5 minutes to read.
You’re welcome.
1. Narrow down your to-do list
Loading up your to-do list is out and narrowing it down to your most important 2 or 3 items is in.
I used to put everything on my list!
Didn’t matter whether it was showering or taking a sh*t, I added it all because it felt great to check things off. That got me in the habit of continuously moving, but it caused one big problem.
A false perception of productivity.
I felt like I was productive, but I was missing some of my most important tasks!
Instead of doing what I did, pick the most important tasks and focus on them first. These tasks are the ones where if they were the only things you worked on all day… you would still feel satisfied at the end of the day.
It’s all about focusing your energy on what matters most!
2. Batch your tasks like Tim Ferriss
Batching was popularized by Tim Ferriss in his book, “4-Hour Workweek”. I bet you’ve heard of it, but I doubt you practice it.
The basic idea is that you should do all of one task at once.
You can batch this task into an hour a day, or even just at a certain time each week.
For example, instead of pulling your phone out and checking your emails every hour for 2 minutes – once or twice a week, block out a couple of hours where you hammer away.
This little trick will make you much more efficient.
One of the reasons this works so effectively is that humans are bad at task-switching. It takes us around 15 minutes to properly adjust to a new task.
So, if you’re constantly going back and forth, it may feel like you’re a productive penguin, but in reality, you’re wasting your time and energy.
Batch your tasks like a winner.
3. Quit multi-tasking!
You’re not a machine. You cannot compute multiple things at once.
Sure, you have a computer with 3 screens, a phone and an iPad, and you feel like you can talk to your coworker while watching a YouTube video all at the same time.
But, you can’t.
You’re going slower, you’re less effective, and you are not fooling anyone.
4. Put your phone away when you’re working
Anything that steals your attention from the task at hand is killing your productivity and wasting your time.
If your phone is going off because Sally is commenting on your Instagram post… that is taking away from you kicking into a flow state.
You want to be completely focused on what you are doing.
Instead of allowing Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page to steal your attention, become a productive machine and put your phone away.
Focus my friend. Focus.
5. Create the ultimate workspace
Everything I listed so far becomes way easier if you have the ultimate workspace.
I know, I know, you may not be able to afford the perfect home office, but you can pick where you work carefully.
I don’t know you, but I’m sure you know yourself well enough to know what environment works best for you.
For myself, I like working in coffee shops where it is so loud that everything becomes white noise. That way all I can hear are my thoughts. That allows me to get into a flow state easily.
If I’m at home, I need to be somewhere very quiet because there will not be enough noise to feel like a coffee shop.
On top of that, I need a chair that doesn’t hurt me because pain would be distracting, and I need the right lighting.
Figure out what the ultimate workspace is, build it, and you will save hundreds of hours a year.
Conclusion
The only question now is, what will you do with all your newfound time?
Will you spend it with your friends and family? Will you double down on your work and reap the rewards? Or, will you sleep more?
By implementing these tips, you will be getting time back for free.
