You won’t find a billionaire or any successful person who won’t admit that a portion of his/her success is attributed to luck.

They were working hard and eventually, luck hit them.

And then some of you will look and say, “They were just in the right place at the right time.”

How do you react when you see someone who is successful?

  1. You immediately dismiss your potential to succeed and proclaim, “I never get lucky”.

  2. You ask yourself, “How can I get lucky too?”

One of these reactions prevents you from playing the game (meaning you likely won’t get lucky), whereas the other puts you in the position to get lucky.

This article is for the number 2s out there.

Equip yourself with the right skills

Elon Musk may have gotten lucky in 2010 when Tesla got a government loan that helped keep it afloat. But, he would have never gotten lucky if he hadn’t learned the right skills to build Tesla into a suitable business to receive the loan.

Moral of the story: You need to build yourself up with the right skills.

With the right skills, you end up in unique opportunities where you can use those skills and get lucky. Those skills are your ticket to enter the game of luck.

Think of NBA players who drain the half-court shot with 1 second left. They may have gotten lucky, but they would have never had the chance if they had not practiced for thousands of hours.

Steph Curry has made over 3000 3-pointers in his career but shot over 2.7 million in practices.

These players have the opportunity to make the lucky shots and can improve their luck with practice.

Figure out what skills you want to master to play the game. Once you start that process, you have a ticket to get lucky.

Surround yourself with the right people

It is rather unlikely that one day the government loan you 400 million dollars to develop anything (like they did with Tesla). You not only need to have the right skills, but you also need to know the right people.

A random person would never call you asking you to join them in a very profitable real estate development, partner in an amazing business or even just gift you something great.

However, when you are surrounded by the right people… these “lucky” opportunities start to appear.

If your friends are real estate developers, business owners, and policymakers and are generous, you now have a unique opportunity to get lucky.

Whereas, if your friends smoke weed all day, have no ambition, and are selfish, your only chance of getting lucky is to buy a lottery ticket.

Remember! Those who are equipped with the right skills are more likely to get lucky!

Your goal is to increase your odds of getting lucky in as many ways as possible.

And one of the best ways to do that is to be surrounded by people who also have a high chance of getting lucky.

Thanks to your unique skills, they will share their luck with you when you are needed.

Stay in the game long enough

You won’t get lucky if you quit playing the game too early. You have to stay in the game long enough so that you even have the chance of getting lucky.

For example, if you’ve been trading stocks for a year, it is unlikely that you hit a stock that multiplies 3x in a year. However, if you’ve been trading for 10 years, now your odds of getting lucky are much higher.

The same concept applies to many different areas.

If you are a business owner who stuck around long enough, you may get lucky and the industry you are in blows up.

If you have been a real estate developer for long enough, you could get lucky when the market plays in your favour so that you get an amazing deal at the right time.

People will look at your luck and say, “He was just in the right place at the right time.” But in reality, you were in that place for years. The right time just finally came.

You won’t get lucky if you don’t play the game long enough.

Conclusion

The concept of luck in general is interesting. Most people only think about blind luck. For example, winning the lottery.

Once you dive in though, you discover that there are numerous ways to increase your odds of getting lucky.

There is no guarantee you will get lucky, but if you are equipped with the right skills, surround yourself with the right people and stay in the game long enough - your odds will improve.

So, start playing the game.
